The “Let’s Team Up to Clean Up, Together for Kilkenny” countdown has begun.  Over 200 groups have registered and now the logistics of getting the litter picking supplies out to the participating groups is underway.  Taking place over the weekend of the 24th of March, the initiative will see over 5,000 volunteers across Kilkenny litter picking their neighbourhoods and planting in excess of 30,000 pollinator friendly flowering bulbs across the county which will bloom over the summer.

The Chairman of Kilkenny County Council visited the PRL site in Kilkenny last week, meeting Operations Manager Gary Brennan, and some of the PRL staff to thank them for financially supporting this unique initiative.   PRL along with Tirlán/Glanbia Plc, Panda, Dawn Meats and John O’Shea Trust has provided financial support to allow Kilkenny County Council make this initiative possible.

Chairman of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr Patrick Fitzpatrick commented “it is truly marvellous for local businesses to get behind this environmental initiative, we are all under pressure financially with rising costs and its incredible that PRL along with the other four businesses have supported Kilkenny County Council to ensure this community initiative became a reality. Initiatives like this provides an opportunity for groups to contribute to a positive climate action and this environmental initiative also  ticks a lot of boxes under the UN Sustainable Development Goals.  Removing litter from the environment will safeguard local biodiversity and it’s fantastic that the initiative has made the segregation of plastic bottles and drink cans possible, therefore increasing recycling rates and boosting the circular economy”.

The registration portal is now closed, however should businesses or companies like to get involved and complete a litter pick on the 24th of March, interested companies or workplaces should email; bernadette.moloney@kilkennycoco.ie for further information before the 14th of March.  The activity can be used as a team building opportunity or an activity under companies CSR policy or simply time for employees to give back to the local area by giving it a quick litter pick.  “Let’s Team Up to Clean Up, Together for Kilkenny” takes place across the weekend of the 24th of March.  More details about the initiative is on https://cleanup.kilkenny.ie/.
